Mother and Daughter Outfits

We were in the City on the Memorial Day weekend Saturday for Finnish School. 

My daughter wore the typical teenager outfit, miniskirt with sneakers. 

And I wore Topshop top, NYDJ jeans, Tory Burch slides, and my Catherine Malandrino tote. I told you I'm getting a lot of use out of it. 

The Day at the Met

Early April I took two of my daughters and a friend to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It was a nice sunshiny spring day and I was in the mood for wearing something pink. Not my usual color, but this year I'm really feeling it. We took these photos at the waiting room of our LIRR station.

Before the Met, the teenagers had to get their make-up shopping fix at Sephora and meanwhile I took my younger daughter to see the Macy's Flower Show. The theme this year was Carnival. The show is pretty every year, and this year even more fun for the kids to see.

After the shopping and the Macy's flower show it was time to uber to the Metropolitan Museum of Art where the teenagers of course wanted to take a ton of pictures sitting, standing and just generally looking cool on the famous museum steps. All we needed was some frozen yogurt to really channel Gossip Girl. 

Have you ever been to the Met? There is so much to see that you can hardly scratch the surface on one visit. You could probably keep going back to the Museum for months if you wanted to see everything they exhibit. So when you don't have months to explore, you have to pick what you want to see wisely. We picked two things: the French Impressionists and the Egyptian wing. 

It is fun to find things that you love in the museum. My daughter fell in love with Degas' Dancer sculpture and ballerina paintings. 

I totally fell in love with this painting of a sunset picnic on the beach by Eugene Boudin. (I'm so predictable.)

Another painting that spoke to me was this Renoir. Wonder why... (Hint: it has three daughters, a dog and a piano...). 

I love asking the kids stupid questions about the art to make them look at it in a different way, or potentially notice something they wouldn't have otherwise. They probably think I'm a total fool. But that's ok. 

Here's a painting by my favorite impressionist, Pierre Bonnard, who loved painting his garden (and his wife taking a bath). 

I also think it's fun and funny to recreate the poses of the paintings. 

I've never been to the Met so that it hasn't been packed with people. It would be fun to have the place all to myself one day... 

The Egyptian temple was closed due to a private event set-up, but the Egyptian tomb was open. It'a bit claustrophobic in there, but if you take a deep breath, and quiet your mind, you may feel the vibes of the people who built it some two thousand years ago... 

I want to go back to the Met soon. And then my destination will be the Costume Institute exhibit that just opened up showcasing Rei Kawakubo's work. I never get tired of going back there, and I hope to instill a love of the museums in my daughters as well. After all, this is how we transfer much of the knowledge of art and culture to the masses.

For some reason I haven't worn my fur vest much this winter. In fact, this past Friday and Saturday I wore it for the first time since last spring. The weather here in Long Island / New York was mild, and it was fine to go without sleeves. I had on layers: BR t-shirt, Zara denim shirt, BR cashmere cardigan, H&M jeans. Lazy as I am, I often repeat outfits on consecutive days. (Honestly, who doesn't?) I may change shoes and/or bag, as I did here...first I wore it on Friday with my Uggs and Prada bag, and then on Saturday with Hermes scarf, Kenneth Cole sneakers, and Bottega Veneta bag. 

What I Wore on One October Saturday

I love buying new clothes in the fall, but this year I've been so busy I haven't really been able to shop much.. I'm dying to find something in velvet, and maybe a nice new woolly coat, either in dark blue or a lighter gray. I should go through the kids' stuff too - a never-ending story as they grow faster than weeds! But in the meanwhile, I have to make do with old stuff. Which, come to think, I have aplenty. Here's what I wore on a Saturday a few weeks ago. (I promise I'll try to catch up to current time fast - so expect posts to come fast and furious until I do!)

Sinivalkoista / Blue and White

I took the kids to the Finnish School yesterday in this (not planned) thematically correct blue and white outfit.

I'm so happy the weather is finally getting slightly cooler. It's soooo nice to be outdoors in the crisp mornings, and not deal with the humidity. 

Saturday in New York City

Last Saturday my daughter and I visited the Tenement Museum on Orchard Street, Lower East Side. It was a great experience for history buffs like us. The contrast between the immigrant life back in the day and my own when I arrived to this country was something to contemplate. I recommend visiting the museum, but be aware that you can only go with a tour, and you have to book way in advance, at least if you want to go on a weekend. They don't allow any photographing inside the museum, so I don't have any pictures from the actual tenement apartments.

I wore my Marimekko for Target top, Calvin Klein pants, Mansur Gavriel bag, Zara sandals. 

We had lunch (The Whole30 compliant, of course) at the Market Ipanema on Kenmare Street.
Not very traditional Brazilian, but very nice and fresh. 

On our way to a bit of shopping on Broadway, we passed by Little Italy. It was the feast of San Gennaro, and the crowds were something else, as evidenced by this photo. 

Luckily, we had already left the city before the explosion took place on Saturday. It's so lucky that nobody died even though it was a huge explosion. New Yorkers have been really chill about the incident. Life goes on and it's business as usual. New Yorkers won't let the fear of terrorism run their lives.

A little bit of Red goes a long way

I haven't posted an outfit for a long time, so here goes.

I whip my hair back and forth :-)

I love my red Tory Burch slides, and my new red patterned sweater from H&M. The pants are from LOFT, t-shirt from Forever21, and bag from Fendi.  

LIIVIRAKKAUS

Kokeillaanpa nyt suomeksi kirjoittamista, tosin kello on jo paljon ja tämä teksti saattaa jäädä lyhyeksi. Anyway, mulla on siis ollut aikamoinen rakkaussuhde liiveihin parin viime vuoden aikana. Eikä liivirakkauden loppua ole näkyvissä. Vai pitäisikö niitä kutsua hihattomiksi jakuiksi? Ei, kyllä mä taida pitäytyä sanassa liivi, vaikka se ei kuulostakaan kovin elegantilta. Tässä on viimeisin liivirakkauteni, Anthropologielta puolitoista viikkoa sitten hankittu erittäin rento pitkänmallinen pehmisliivi. Se sopi mainiosti New Yorkin ihanan lämpimään kevätpäivään lauantaina.

Playing Hooky

I had to take my daughter to the City for a specialist doctor's appointment on Friday morning. Since there was no way she was going to make it back to school that day, we decided to take the opportunity to hang out in the City and check out the sales.

I love the Grand Central Terminal, it's just so Grand :-)

And yes, we did do a bit of shopping... 

Ti di diii, di di diiii. 

I've had this H&M coat for ten years, I swear, and I still love it! The scarf I've knitted myself. The Gucci bag has been more or less attached to my arm since I got it last summer... And the Steve Madden boots are the most comfortable ever. 

City Saturday

We tried a new place for brunch today at the West Village, Maison Kayser, a French bakery on the corner of Bleecker and Christopher Streets. A good addition to the brunch options close to the Finnish school. The food is quite "French" which I and my daughter liked very much. My husband was not that convinced...he only complimented the coffee which was excellent.

This little girl is getting so spoiled - we can't help it...she's just too cute not to be spoiled!
